What Can I Expect At Hand Therapy?

1. Initial Evaluation

Your first visit is a 1-hour individualized evaluation, inclusive of medical history, review of medical and surgical interventions, measurements where appropriate (motion, strength, sensation, dexterity, and more), wound care as needed, and orthotic fabrication as necessary. In our conversation we will discuss your wants and needs from therapy, create personalized goals, and discuss steps to achieve those goals. You will leave with a personalized folder consisting of your treatment plan, exercises, and goals.

2. Manual Therapies and Modalities

I believe that being a hands-on therapist is essential for patient healing.  I use a variety of manual therapy techniques including stretching, mobilization, manipulation, and massage to improve the functional, pain free use of your upper limb. In addition to this, I also use modalities as necessary to enhance tissue elongation, promote healing, and provide pain relief. This includes heat therapy, cold therapy, TENS and paraffin wax.

3. Intervention Planning

Intervention planning is the ongoing, evolving process of planning and adjusting your treatment program. This may include wound care, orthotic fabrication, exercise, functional activities, endurance training, neuromuscular re-education, sensory re-education, manual therapies, and the use of modalities. Ideally, as our sessions progress, your treatments will increase in demand, effort, and functional use of your upper limb.

Does Hand Therapy Hurt?
Hand therapy should not hurt- in fact, I believe largely in the concept of treating without pain. At times there may be some discomfort from stretching tight tissue, moving stiff joints, and caring for open wounds and new injuries, however no pain should be experienced.  There is constant communication throughout the session and if at any time something is too uncomfortable or painful, we will change our approach!

How Long Will I Need Therapy?
It depends. There are established expectations for length of care depending on your type of injury and whether you have gotten surgery or not. However, other factors such as past medical history, general health status, smoking status, autoimmune status and many other factors can either positively or negatively impact healing.  For the most accurate assessment of your needed length and frequency of therapy, click here for a free phone consultation.
